Named for ሀሁ (ha–hu), the first two characters of the Fidel and what Amharic speakers call the alphabet itself. It teaches all 231 characters — 33 families of seven — plus 500 everyday words and 100 phrases.

The word list and the phrasebook have not yet been checked by a native speaker. Spellings, translations and phrasing may change. The Fidel characters themselves are derived from Unicode and are reliable.
About the audio
Where you see "(synthesized voice)", you are hearing your device's text-to-speech, not a native speaker — useful for a rough idea, not for copying pronunciation. Recordings by a native speaker are being made.
What we count
Which screens are opened and whether answers were right — counts only. No account, no name, and nothing you type or say. The website also runs Google Analytics, which sets a cookie holding a random number so a returning browser can be recognised as the same one, and sees the page, where you arrived from, and a rough place — about city level — worked out from your network address. In the European Economic Area and the UK no cookie is set at all, because the rules there say we should ask first and we have not built a way to ask. No advertising anywhere.
